Grosse Pointe Shores is the smallest and quietest of the five Pointes — a village that straddles the Wayne and Macomb county line and is almost entirely residential. There is no shopping district here in the sense that the City, the Farms or the Woods have one. What the Shores has instead is the lake, and a stretch of Lake Shore Road that is among the most scenic drives in southeast Michigan: water on one side, deep lawns and long-established houses on the other.

Because the Shores keeps its commercial footprint small, the businesses that do carry a Shores address tend to be specific rather than everyday — professional offices, a small number of services, and destinations connected to the water and the village's civic life. Residents cross into the Woods or the Farms for groceries, salons and restaurants, most of them only a few minutes down Mack Avenue or Vernier Road.

The Shores' best-known landmark sits on the lakefront: the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, the family estate now open to the public for tours, grounds and programming, which brings visitors from well outside the Pointes. The village also maintains its own lakefront park with pool, harbor and beach frontage for residents, and the shoreline here is the reason most people come — whether to walk, to sail, or simply to drive Lake Shore at dusk.
